The method serves for the production of a package and for quality control and comprises the steps of: A) producing or making available a planar packaging material (1), wherein at least one luminescent substance (21, 22) is introduced into the packaging material (1), and the at least one luminescent substance (21, 22), seen in a plan view, is introduced at least into those areas of the packaging material (1) that are subsequently used to package a product (3), B) packaging the product (3) using the packaging material (1), C) irradiating the packaging material (1) with electrons (e), gamma radiation, X-radiation and/or ultraviolet radiation, such that the packaging material (1) is sterilized at least in parts or at least a microbe count is reduced, wherein a spectral and/or temporal profile of a luminescence of the at least one luminescent substance (21, 22) is modified in the irradiation process, and D) reading out the luminescence of the at least one luminescent substance (21, 22) after step C), wherein it is ascertained whether step C) has been performed correctly.
