PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to maintain a color development state at a predetermined color development level and easily perform decoloration.SOLUTION: An electrochromic device 100 comprises: a display substrate 10, display electrode 11, electrochromic layer 12, opposing substrate 14, opposing electrode 13, electrolyte 15, spacer 16, and driving means 17. The electrochromic device causes the driving means 17 to apply a predetermined voltage to between the display electrode 11 and opposing electrode 13 to perform color development drive, measures in advance an open-circuit voltage between the display substrate 11 and opposing electrode 13 to calculate a change in the open-circuit voltage over time; performs decoloration drive; in performing color development drive and decoloration drive, performs the color development drive to cause the electrochromic layer 12 to develop color in a predetermined color development state, and subsequently applies, for a predetermined period, an open-circuit voltage when the absolute value of the change over time reaches 0.2 mV/sec. or less to perform holding drive; and then performs decoloration drive.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2 |
