Feed supplement for mammals (esp. pigs) comprises or contains a prod. obtd. by lactic fermentation of dried green malt (germinated for 8-14 days). The prod. contains 7-10 wt.% water, 48-53 wt.% starch, 9-11 wt.% protein, 1-3 wt.% residual sugar and 3-5 wt.% total acid (calcd. as lactic acid). The supplement is pref. produced by (a) malting barley until the max. maltose concn. is obtd. esp. for 8-14 days at 8-18 deg.C; (b) drying the green malt at 70 deg.C or below; (c) fermenting the dried malt in water in the presence of lactic-acid-producing bacteria; esp. at 45-48 deg.C for 3-6 days under aseptic conditions; and (d) drying the prod. at 50 deg.C or below. The supplement has a preventive and curative effect on digestive disorders, esp. in intensively reared piglets. |
