The method involves measuring oxygen quantity available in an exhaust gas upstream of a particle filter (19) of an exhaust line (1). Post-combustion fuel injection is controlled in the line or in cylinders of an oil engine (3), with respect to the measured oxygen quantity. Post-combustion fuel quantity (Q) is variable with respect to the measured oxygen quantity. The controlling of the injection is carried out by determining a setpoint (C) corresponding to the fuel quantity relative to the measured oxygen quantity and by injecting the fuel in the line or the cylinders. An independent claim is also included for a device for treating exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine.
