Light from an incoherent optical source (2) is passed into the test waveguide (8) via a coaxial transmission optical waveguide (4). Light from the test waveguide is received by an optical detector (10). A beam expansion element is mounted between the output surface (12) of the transmission waveguide and the input surface (13) of the test waveguide. The output and input surfaces of the transmission and test waveguides are separated by more than 100 um, esp. 500 to 600 um. The input surface of the test waveguide is aligned w.r.t. a reference surface formed by a plug connector element.
