PURPOSE:To easily produce an imide compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and natural substances at a low cost. CONSTITUTION:Either one of the compounds of formula IV to formula VII is produced by reacting a compound of formula I (A is formyl or its equivalent group; R is H or (substituted)alkyl; (n) is 0 or 1; R<1> to R<3> are H, alkyl, phenyl, amino, alkoxy, phenoxy, alkylthio or phenylthio (each of which may have substituent), (protected)OH, halogen or CN; two of R<1> to R<3> may together form a ring; R groups may together form CH which may together with one of R<1> to R<3> form a ring; R<1> to R<3> are not same to each other) with a compound of formula II (R<4> is H or alkoxy, phenoxy, alkylthio or phenylthio (each of which may have substituent); R<5> is alkyl, trialkylsilyl, (substituted)phenyl, naphthyl, etc.; R<6> is electron-attracting group) in the presence of a compound of formula III (M is metal; Hal is halogen; R is alkyl, alkoxy, phenoxy, etc.; (n) and (m) are 0-5) and a base.
