摘要 <p>A thermal barrier coating (20) adapted to be formed on an article (12) subjected to a hostile thermal environment while subjected to erosion by particles and debris, as is the case with turbine, combustor and augmentor components of a gas turbine engine. The thermal barrier coating (20) is composed of a metallic bond layer (26) deposited on the surface of the article (12), a ceramic layer (30) overlaying the bond layer (26), and an erosion-resistant composition (24, 24a) dispersed within or overlaying the ceramic layer (30). The bond layer (26) serves to tenaciously adhere the thermal insulating ceramic layer (30) to the article (12), while the erosion-resistant composition (24, 24a) renders the ceramic layer (30) more resistant to erosion. The erosion-resistant composition (24, 24a) is either alumina (Al2O3) or silicon carbide (SiC), while a preferred ceramic layer (30) is yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) deposited by a physical vapor deposition technique to have a columnar grain structure. &lt;IMAGE&gt;</p>
