The gate (2) is hinged to a post (4) anchored in the ground and has a lock with a latch (16) with a handle (24) which is pulled back to release the latch from the housing (20) in the strike plate (22). A spring (18) returns the latch to its closed position. The strike plate has a two sloped sections (26, 28) on either side of the housing to guide the latch into the housing from either side. The housing has a central bar (30) with a rubber coating which forms a stop for the latch. At the hinged end of the gate there are areas which slope (12, 8, 6) from the vertical axis of rotation. There is a guide rail (8) which raises the gate as it is opened so that when the gate is released, the weight of the gate moves it along the guide rail to its point of equilibrium which corresponds to its closed position.
