摘要 <p>A conventional technique for superimposing a dynamic image sequence of component dynamic images having a high frame rate on a dynamic image sequence having a low frame rate so as to prepare a new sequence is problematic in that when an area other than the selected area changes with time, a discontinuous boundary appears in the synthetic image and the image quality is deteriorated. In this invention, two decoded lower layer frames are used to synthesize a lower layer frame which does not exist. In this synthesis, one of the two lower layer frames is used as a first reference frame, and the other is used as a second reference frame. A specified area in the first reference frame is used as a first area, and a specified area in the second reference frame is used as a second area. In the synthetic frame, the pixel values of the pixels outside the first area are copied from the pixels in the same positions in the first reference frame. The pixel values of the pixels in the first area are found by motion compensation prediction from the pixels outside the second area in the second reference frame. The pixel values of the pixels for which no motion compensation prediction is carried out in the first area are found by interpolation from peripheral pixels of which the pixel values are already found.</p>
