A nuclear power plant comprises a casing (1), which encloses a primary space (2), a reactor vessel (9), which is arranged in the primary space (2), and a reactor core (10) which is provided in the reactor vessel. Furthermore, the plant comprises an upper space (19) provided above the casing (1). The reactor core (10) is separated from the upper space (19) by means of an openable cover arrangement (21, 22). The casing is designed in such a manner that the primary space is completely closed against the environment at least to a level corresponding to the most highly located part of the reactor core (10). The upper space (19) is arranged to house a volume of a liquid, which volume is sufficiently large to permit the filling of the primary space (2) with said liquid to a level (25) located above the most highly located part of the reactor core (10).
