There is described a method of treating plant material to preserve plant material in a coloured form. The method comprises: (a) treating the plant material with the preservation medium having a pH below 3 for 1-90 minutes at 60-90 DEG C; and (b) washing the plant material with water and/or propan-2-ol to remove the excess preservation medium. A preferred composition of the preservation medium comprises 50-90 vol % 1,2-propanediol, 10-40 vol % 1,4-butanediol and 0-25 vol % 1,6-hexanediol and the low pH required may be obtained through addition of acid, with p-toluenesulphonic acid being preferred. The method is suitable for treatment of flower petals. Optionally metal salts (such as CuSO4) may be included to enhance the light stabilisation of the plant material, for example red or yellow rose petals. |
