The longitudinal link (2) is used in the structure of a road vehicle. It is made of a first U-section bent sheet metal component (11) and a strap (12) fitted together. A notch (10) forms a crumple zone for deformation during a crash. The bent sheet metal components form a rectangular cross-section. There is a rectangular controlled deformation element (17) in the crumple zone, with four tongues (21,23) bent at right-angles to the central base portion (18).
