An electric motor (1) has a rotor (3) linked to a hollow connector (6) whose inner wall (7) has alternating raised and recessed areas for engaging a machine part, in particular an extruder screw shaft. The outer wall of the connector also has alternating raised areas and recesses which engage in a complementary hollow component (18) of the rotor (3) or motor shaft (5) connected to the rotor. The alternating raised and recessed areas are formed either completely or partly as internal (7) and/or external teeth parallel to the rotor axis. Internal and external teeth may have equal or differently spaced teeth, in particular external teeth having a smaller spacing. A hollow end (18) of the motor shaft (5) receives the outer wall of the hollow connector (6). The hollow motor shaft has an internal diameter exceeding the outer diameter of the machine or extruder shaft. An internal bore (16) of the motor shaft runs parallel to the rotor axis and has an internal thread into which an externally threaded bolt (15) is screwed. Coolant may flow through the bore to cool the electric motor. Rotating bearings, in particular anti-friction bearings (10a,10b) support the motor shaft on a stator of the motor (1). The shaft extends out of the motor housing (2). A hollow cylindrical extension (12) surrounding the hollow connector is attached onto the housing end face or a housing bearing plate (9a). Positive engagement is produced between the hollow connector and rotor hollow component.
