PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a new thickener which is thickened or gelled in a high temperature condition and returns to a sol state in a low temperature condition, and to apply the thickener to cosmetics and cleaners. SOLUTION: This thickener is characterized by comprising a block copolymer in which a polymer portion (A) having LCST in a range of 0 to 50°C and a hydrophilic polymer portion (B) are bound to each other and which has a weight-average mol. wt. of≤95,000, wherein the aqueous solution of the block copolymer is thickened or gelled, when subjected to the change of temperature in the range of 0 to 50°C.
