Disclosed is a surface illumination unit characterized by comprising a casing having a bottom surface, side walls formed on a pair of opposite lateral surfaces, and openings formed at the positions for the other pair of opposite lateral surfaces, and an optical reflector plate arranged at a certain distance from the bottom surface. This surface illumination unit is further characterized in that each side wall has a reflective surface both on the inner face and on the outer face.
