SURGICAL INSTRUMENT WITH STAMPED DOUBLE-FLAG JAWS AND ACTUATION MECHANISM A surgical instrument, comprising: a housing (12); an elongated shaft (16) including a proximal portion coupled to the housing (12) and a distal portion opposite the proximal portion, the elongated shaft (16) defining a longitudinal axis; an end effector (14) supported by the distal portion of the elongated shaft (16), the end effector (14) adapted for treating tissue and including first and second jaw members (30, 32) pivotally coupled to one another to move between open and closed configurations, wherein each of the jaw members (30, 32) includes a pair of laterally spaced flanges (30a, 30b, 32a, 32b), and wherein each of the flanges includes a camming surface thereon; a knife (102) extending at least partially through the elongated shaft (16) and selectively movable in a longitudinal direction between the flanges (30a, 30b, 32a, 32b) of the jaw members (30, 32), a blade of the knife (102) extendable into a tissue contacting portion of the jaw members (30, 32); and a drive rod (80) extending at least partially through the elongated shaft (16) and selectively movable in a longitudinal direction with respect to the knife (102) and with respect to the elongated shaft (16), the drive rod (80) carrying a cam pin (92) positioned to engage the camming surface of each of the flanges (30a, 30b, 32a, 32b) to induce the jaw members (30, 32) to move between the open and closed configurations, the drive rod (80) substantially surrounding the knife (102) on four lateral sides to restrict motion of the knife in at least two orthogonal planes. |
