<p>An active matrix addressed display system suitable for TV purposes has a plurality of row and column conductors (34, 35) and a matrix array of liquid crystal display elements (37) each connected in series with a two terminal non-linear resistance element (31) in the form of diode structures such as diode ring circuits between a row conductor (34) and a column conductor (35) and is driven by applying to one of the conductors (34) associated with each display element (37) drive signals comprising a selection signal portion (Vs) for setting a display condition followed by a sustain signal portion (VH) for sustaining that condition for an interval prior to receipt of the next selection signal. By decreasing the magnitude of the sustain signal (VH) over its duration, vertical cross-talk problems or the need to increase the number of diode structures can be avoided. The sustain signal is decreased gradually, either continuously or in steps, so as to minimise the mean voltage across the non-linear element, and preferably in accordance with the decay time constant of the liquid crystal material of the display element.</p> |
