The unit has a light source (7) situated at its rear, and between it and the indicator component (2) is a diffuser (4). The surface (6) of the pane (5) towards the component is pyramidal in shape, and the diffuser is at the side of the pane furthest from the component. The latter can be formed by a display pane, typically coloured and incorporating letters and/or symbols. Alternatively it can consist of a liquid-crystal cell. The diffuser can be formed by a roughened surface on the clear pane, or alternatively can be of transparent material in which there are scatter pigments or particles at intervals.
