The lock-up clutch of a torque converter is engaged to directly couple the output shafts of an engine and a transmission, when the engine speed is slightly less than that of the transmission. The engine speed is made to rise when the difference between the engine speed and input shaft speed of the transmission is detected to exceed a preset value. The torque converter is interposed between the engine and transmission. The lock up clutch of the torque converter is engaged with oil or hydraulic pressure.
