The removal of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) from air contaminated by engine exhaust gas, especially in tunnels, garages or similar traffic zones, comprises contacting the contaminated air with activated charcoal catalyst(s) to convert NO2 to less harmful substances, including nitrogen (N2), at ambient temperature, without adding other functional substances, e.g. ammonia or other additional reactive gases.
