The engine has a piston rod (7) connected to the lifting pin (4) of a crankshaft (1). An eccentric cam (6) is rotatably arranged between the lifting pin and the piston rod for lifting a piston (12). A locking device (9) is used to securely latch to the eccentric cam to prevent the eccentric cam from rotating if desired. An independent claim is also included for the operation of the internal combustion engine.
