A purified and isolated hamster EF-l alpha transcriptional regulatory DNA selected from the group consisting of a) a DNA comprising the nucleic acid sequence shown in SEQ ID NO: 1, b) a DNA comprising a portion of a nucleic acid sequence shown in SEQ ID NO: 1, which is capable of promoting transcription of a gene operatively linked to the regulatory DNA, c) a DNA comprising from about nucleotide 2114 to about nucleotide 3656 shown in SEQ ID NO: 1, d) an 11.7 kb of hamster EF-l alpha regulatory DNA sequence in plasmid pDEF14 being deposited with the ATCC Collection and assigned Accession Number 98398, e) a DNA comprising the nucleic acid sequence shown in SEQ ID NO: 28, f) a hamster regulatory DNA sequence which hybridises to DNA described in SEQ ID NO: 1 under conditions comprising a final washing in buffer containing 2X SSC and 0.1 % SDS at 65 °C, g) a DNA comprising 1.56 kb 5' to the initiating ATG codon in SEQ ID NO: 1.
