The invention relates to a reactor in which a gas or a liquid is chemically transformed by means of a catalyst. Heat exchange occurs inside the reactor (1) between a combustion gas mixture and a cooling or heating medium (3). The invention also relates to a method for operating said reactor. The aim of the invention is to provide a reactor of the above-mentioned variety having a comparatively small volume or comparatively small mass. Another objective of the invention is to provide advantageous methods for the operation thereof. The invention is based on a reactor of the above-mentioned variety, wherein a turbulence structure is formed by at least one sieve-like body (2). Unlike pellets used in prior art, each sieve-like body has a plurality of through holes or channels. Wire mesh is an example of one such body. The sieve-like bodies are coated with a catalytic material.
