PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multi-split type mechanical seal capable of preventing or suppressing fluid leakage from a seal portion by soaking segments in multi-split type rotary ring and stationary ring, and reducing difference in thermal expansion between the segments.SOLUTION: A multi-split type mechanical seal M includes a stationary ring 4 disposed on a casing 3 of a shaft-sealed apparatus, a rotary ring 2 disposed on a rotating shaft 1 of the shaft-sealed apparatus while axially opposed to the stationary ring 4, and elastic members 15, 16 disposed in a compression state on back surfaces as surfaces at a side opposite to seal surfaces, of the rotary ring 2 and the stationary ring 4 so that the opposed seal surfaces of the rotary ring 2 and the stationary ring 4 are kept into contact with each other. Each of the rotary ring 2 and the stationary ring 4 is composed of five or more segments divided in the circumferential direction. The segments are made of SiC sintered body or hard metal.
