The centering and holding equipment is for the working of rotational symmetrical ceramic workpieces, esp. lifting supports of ceramic umbrella-type insulators having a high degree of thinness. The working is pref. carried out on vertical finishing machines. The workpiece receptorconsits of a suction head unit and a centering plate. The head isplaced over the workpiece and evacuated. The suction head unit can be equipped with a mounting plate and a vacuum connector. The unit is pressed against the workpiece by a hydraulic cylinder. The workpiece,driven from below as is customary, is formed without using carrier plates or follower pins. This obviates jags and scoring.
