A gripper for transporting containers has a gripper top part and a gripper bottom part hanging thereon, on which gripping members for taking hold of the container in a positive-locking manner are movably mounted. The gripping members can be put into gripping position via a vertically movable actuating member which is vertically movable from the gripper top part between two end positions, a motor-actuated plunger being arranged in the gripper top part. According to the invention, the gripper top part (2) is telescopically freely movable relative to the gripper bottom part (3, 41) by at least the stroke (H) of the actuating member (11, 12; 42); the gripper top part (2) and actuating member (11, 12; 42) have stop surfaces such that the actuating member (11, 12; 42) can be moved downwards by its stroke (H) for producing the gripping position by further lowering of the gripper top part (2) after the gripper bottom part (3, 41) is put down on a container (31; 48); the gripper top part (2), in the position lowered by the stroke (H) relative to the gripper bottom part (3, 41), can be connected to the actuating member (11, 12; 42) by means of a locking device (13, 14); and the locking device (13, 14) can be actuated via the plunger (5) for locking the gripper top part (2) and actuating member (11, 12; 42). <IMAGE>
