The apparatus includes an envelope curve detector (12,12') for detecting envelope curve of signal detected by magnetic head (S, S') and A/D converter (13, 13') for converting detected signal to digital signal, a microprocessor (14) for comparing digital signal with a reference signal so that drive signal for head motor is produced, a D/A converter (15, 15') for converting drive signal into analog signal, and a motor driver (16, 16') for driving motor (7, 7') according to analog drive signal.
