The video tape recorder has a recording mode selector which allows the video signals to be recorded in two alternate formats, with the bightness and colour signal components recorded along separate tracks and the frequency modulated brightness signal component and frequency connected colour side carrier signal superimposed, respectively. The rotary head drum has two pairs of magnetic heads (Y1, C1, Y2, (C2) with different azimuth angles and a fifth magnetic head (Y3) diametrically opposite the first head (Y1) of one of the pairs. The respective signals are fed to the heads in dependence on the selected recording mode.
