<p>A vehicle protection and communication system which incorporates both a visual display of the magnitude of approach distances and an audible warning when these distances are closed within an unsafe range, together with an external message display subsystem and intrusion detection subsystem. The system is designed to display the distance between the rear of a vehicle and an obstacle which it is approaching while moving in reverse. The system operates based on ultrasonic transmission and reception and uses relatively simple timing and control circuitry, making it an inexpensive but reliable design. Enhanced vehicle safety is achieved by affording a driver with a pictorial representation in the form of an icon, visually and audibly warning him that a dangerous condition exists, in an attempt to avoid collisions. Messages concerning vehicle proximity to obstacles and vehicle operation may also be externally displayed.</p> |
