PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel property discriminating device for an internal combustion engine to prevent worsening of controllability due to a difference in fuel property during starting, right after starting, and during transition by early discriminating fuel property without increasing a cost and executing optimum control suitable for fuel property at the early stage. SOLUTION: This device comprises a means 30 to detect first explosion during starting of an internal combustion engine; a means 31 to measure the number N of ON times of a crank angle signal CA until first explosion is detected; a means 32 to set the reference number NST of revolutions; a means 33 to compare the number of ON times with the reference number of times; and a means 37 to discriminate fuel property based on a comparing result A.
