At least one wheel (2) of a wheel set is moved along a measurement stretch with a measurement slit (6) parallel to the wheel. A measurement beam (LS) is directed at the wheel surface (21) from the slit. The reflected beam is detected and from it the separation (m, n) to the wheel running surface (21) is determined.
