PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for controlling overload operation of an air conditioner are provided to realize continuous cooling operation by lowering a large discharge pressure of compressors by variably controlling operation capacity of the compressors according to an outdoor temperature and an outdoor pipe temperature. CONSTITUTION: An outdoor pipe temperature sensor(100) detects a temperature of an outdoor pipe. An outdoor temperature sensor(200) detects an outdoor temperature. A memory(400) stores an outdoor reference temperature and an outdoor pipe reference temperature which become a reference of operating and stopping compressors, and operation stop reference time of each compressor. A control unit(300) compares the outdoor pipe temperature and the outdoor temperature with the outdoor pipe reference temperature and the operation stop reference time for controlling the compressors in order.
