The mat comprises animal fibres (e.g. hair) and a reinforcing mesh. The mat comprises needled wool and contains seeds, seedlings or cuttings. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) Carrier mat comprising thermally bonded animal fibres (e.g. hair) which are thermally; (b) Use of wool for producing a carrier mat for growing plants on roofs or ground surfaces (e.g. roundabouts); and (c) Use of wool as a carrier and matrix material for growing plant roots.
