The system has an absolute humidity sensor (30) for determining absolute humidity of supply air, and a central control unit (29) for controlling an air supply unit according to the determined humidity. The control unit utilizes the measured humidity for reducing pressure in a condensation unit (4), while conserving the water autonomy. The control unit controls a fuel cell (1), a reformer (2) and an air compression unit (6). An independent claim is also included for a method for producing water for a fuel cell system embarked in a motor vehicle.
