PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an interpretation/translation system by which both voice and characters of a language desired by a user can be interpreted regardless of time and location, the user side can utilize the service within a payable range, and the service provider side can expect a stable collection rate of charges. SOLUTION: Different languages are interpreted through a line in the system. A person, who wants to have a conversation with a person speaking a different language, makes a phone call to the interpretation system by a portable telephone or a device enabling the person to make a phone call. The language desired to be interpreted by the person is discriminated in the interpretation system. The phone call made by the person is connected to a telephone or a portable telephone of an interpreter capable of interpreting the language.
