A method, system and article facilitate the playing of virtual sports tournament games on handheld and/or mobile wireless communications devices that mimic actual or physical sports tournaments or games. A random number generator simulates the outcome of the movement used in the underlying sport of the tournament. After the requisite number of movements called for in tournament rules for the underlying sport, the score is calculated and submitted from the handheld and/or mobile wireless communication device to the game server. At the end of the tournament based on a time corresponding to the physical tournament, one or more winners are determined based on the scores submitted to the game server.
