PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing hollow silica particles by which the formation of silica coating films can be performed efficiently and to provide a method for producing core-shell particles. SOLUTION: The method for producing hollow silica particles according to the present invention comprises the following steps (A) to (D): (A) a step of heat-treating an aqueous medium containing calcium carbonate particles and at least one compound selected from oxo acids and salts thereof, (B) a step of washing the calcium carbonate particles after the heat treatment, (C) a step of obtaining core-shell particles by hydrolytically condensing at least one compound selected from among a compound represented by formula (1): R<SP>1</SP>Si(OR<SP>2</SP>)<SB>4-d</SB>(wherein R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each independently a monovalent organic group; and d is an integer of 0-3), silicic acid, and a silicate in the presence of a basic catalyst to form silica coating layers surrounding the calcium carbonate particles, and (D) a step of partially or totally removing the calcium carbonate from the core-shell particles surrounded with the silica coating layers.
