PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide exfoliation and dispersion carbon nanotubes resulting in high aspect ratios, where surface-modified carbon nanotubes are readily dispersed in various media.SOLUTION: An embodiment of the invention provides a plurality of carbon nanotubes comprising carbon nanotube fibers having an aspect ratio from about 25 to about 500, and an oxidation level from about 3 wt.% to about 15 wt.%. An embodiment of the invention provides such carbon nanotubes for which a neutralized water treatment of the fibers results in a pH from about 3 to about 9, preferably from about 4 to about 8. An embodiment of the invention provides such carbon nanotubes whose oxidation species comprises carboxylic acid or derivative carboxylate groups.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 13 |
