The present invention provides a method for greatly reducing the amount of solids-containing waste streams produced during the recovery of acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile produced by the ammoxidation reaction of propylene or isobutylene with molecular oxygen and ammonia. This is realized by recycling at least a part of the product column bottoms to the quench column.
