A vehicle article carrier (10) having at least one lateral cross rail (16, 18) selectively positionable along longitudinally extending side rails (12, 14). Stanchions (20, 22) are connected to opposite ends of the cross rail (16, 18) and slidably engage longitudinally formed interior cavities in the side rails (12, 14). A latch (42, 38) is coupled between each stanchion (20, 22) and each side rail (12, 14) to releasable latch each stanchion (20, 22) and the cross rail (16, 18) in a selected, fixed position along the side rails (12, 14). |
