Apparatus for treating exhaust gas comprises a particle separator (101), an SCR catalyst (102) which selectively reduces nitrogen oxides, and an ammonia generator which produces ammonia for use as a selective reducing agent for nitrogen oxides. The ammonia generator is mounted in a branch (105) off the main gas flow pipe (104) and connected to it so that the ammonia it produces flows through the SCR catalyst. An independent claim is included for a method for treating exhaust gas comprising separating out particles in a separator and reducing nitrogen oxides in the resulting gas using a selective catalyst, ammonia being used as reducing agent and being passed from branch into main gas pipe.
