The device has an excitation unit (2) i.e. hydraulic exciter, exciting a mechanically oscillatable unit (1) i.e. membrane, to the mechanical oscillations. The excitation unit and the mechanically oscillatable unit are coupled with each other mechanically by an intermediatory medium (3) e.g. incompressible oil. An evaluation unit (4) is formed in such a manner that the evaluation unit evaluates the power requirement of the excitation unit with respect to a process variable i.e. fill level, of a medium (10) e.g. liquid.
