<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having an superior short wavelength recording property by achieving higher output by using optimum magnetic powder for high density recording. <P>SOLUTION: A magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer which contains magnetic powder and a binder on a non-magnetic support object. In the magnetic recording medium, the magnetic powder has at least iron and nitrogen as configuration elements, includes nitriding iron based magnetic powder containing at least a Fe<SB>16</SB>N<SB>2</SB>phase, and in X-ray diffraction measured using a Kα1 line of copper as a radiation source, a diffraction peak equivalent to a face (220) of the Fe<SB>16</SB>N<SB>2</SB>phase and a diffraction peak corresponding to a face (110) of α-Fe are in the extent of 2.0-7.0 in terms of B/A where A is a diffraction peak intensity corresponding to the face (202) of the Fe<SB>16</SB>N<SB>2</SB>phase, and B is a diffraction peak intensity generated when these diffraction peaks are piled up, and in the extent of C/A ≤0.3 where C is the diffraction intensity corresponding to the face of (111) of the Fe<SB>4</SB>N phase. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
