A method for measurement includes acquiring an autocorrelation trace of an ultra-short pulse of radiation (60). A basis of functions is defined (62) in which an intensity profile of the pulse can be sparsely represented. A sparse representation of the pulse in terms of the functions, having an autocorrelation matching the autocorrelation trace, is computed by searching over the basis. A waveform of the pulse is reconstructed using the computed sparse representation (66).
