As magnetic tape (2) is unwound from the feed spool (1), tension is maintained by the friction between a flanged plate (10) which turns with the spindle (3). A stationary plate (9) with a felt friction pad (13) is provided between the plates. A magnetic coil (8) maintains the pressure between the plates, and so regulates the friction. A tension sensing lever (16) sends a measurement voltage (Ur) to a control circuit (21), which regulates the current in the coil. Alternative tensions can be set by adjusting the lever spring (18) or the reference voltage (22). USE/ADVANTAGE - Magnetic tape recorders, especially digital VCRs. Maintains constant tension as tape unwinds from spool. Tension can be adjusted for different tape speeds.
