PURPOSE: A bi-directional wavelength division multiplexing self-healing optical communication network embodies a bi-directional add/drop multiplexer having a simple structure by using one NxN multiplexer, and uses only two optical fibers by using the bi-directional add/drop multiplexer. CONSTITUTION: In an optical communication network wherein two optical fibers are interconnected between nodes, two optical signal receivers(10,19) sense a receiving of the optical signal. Two switching parts(13,16) are switched to a spare optical fiber in case of a cutting of an operating optical fiber. Two switching controllers(12,17) control the switching parts. A multiplexing/demultiplexing part is connected between the switching parts, and performs a multiplexing and a demultiplexing at the same time. Many optical amplifiers are connected to the optical ring and a spare ring. The multiplexing/demultiplexing part(B-ADM) includes one multiplexer for performing a multiplexing and a demultiplexing of the wavelength divided signals being fold-back connected therebetween, two circulators, and two filters for filtering the multiplexed signals from the multiplexer. Thereby, the number of optical fibers needed to a bi-directional self-healing optical communication network is reduced by half. |
