PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably crush and deform a side member without being broken or buckling in crushing and deforming the side member and improve energy absorbing effect by boring holes in two portions symmetrical about the central axis in the side wall part of the side member formed out of extruded aluminum alloy material into a two by two matrix shape in section. SOLUTION: A side member 1 has holes 2a, 2b bored in two portions symmetrical about the central axis of the side wall part thereof. When the axial compression load in the same direction as the load generated at the time of a head-on collision of a vehicle is applied to the side member 1, crushing and deformation are caused to show a designated load-displacement curve. In this case, as the side member 1 is plastic-deformed taking the holes 2a, 2b as a starting point, the initial peak load can be reduced so that the breakage and buckling are not caused to increase the energy absorbing amount. Thus, the aluminum extruded material is applied to the side member of a two by two matrix shape in section, and the size of each hole 2a, 2b is adjusted to control the initial peak load.
