A transport system has a pipe (5) beginning (4) at a northerly point on the earth's surface and passing through the sea tangentially to the surface of land or sea. The pipe surfaces at a more southerly delivery dock (7). Castor-mounted container (6) loads are released into the pipe by a tip-up truck and travel to their destination using gravitational pull. The pipe is anchored to the sea bed by chains and foundations to maintain the required tangential trajectory. The containers have spring-mounted rollers, lifting eyes, hatch, and modules containing e.g. heating and sensors.
