PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for sensitivity adjustment of television cameras, which combine a diaphragm controllable lens and an electron multiplying type solid-state image pickup device, and can automatically adjust sensitivity with the optimal image quality priority. SOLUTION: In the method for sensitivity adjustment of television cameras, the electron multiplying type image pickup device photographs the diaphragm controllable lens and incident light from the lens. In a television camera which outputs video signals, a specified diaphragm range of the lens is controlled for opening and closure. In the outside of the specified diaphragm range of the lens, the diaphragm of the lens is maintained within a specified opening and closing range and the rate of electron multiplying of the electron multiplying type image pickup device is controlled.
