PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of turning off a lamp while surely detecting abnormal lighting of the lamp. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus reads an image recorded on an image face of an original while leading reflected light from the image face of the original illuminated by using the lamp to an image sensor. The image reader is provided with a first control means for controlling the lighting of the lamp, and a second control means for monitoring whether or not the lamp is normally controlled by the first control means.
